Dr. Mamdouh Al-Rifai, President of the Arab Union of Customs Executives, participated in the press conference held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab Economic Unity Council on “The Digital Economy in Arab Countries.” The conference was attended by His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Al-Rubaie, Secretary-General of the Arab Economic Unity Council; Dr. Atef Helmy, former Egyptian Minister of Communications; Dr. Ali Al-Khoury, Advisor to the Arab Economic Unity Council and President of the Arab Digital Economy Union (under establishment); and Mr. Mohamed Abu Al-Enein, businessman and Chairman of the Council of Elders and Advisory Board at the Arab Economic Unity Council.
During the conference, Dr. Al-Rifai raised an important question about the role of this conference in activating the Arab Customs Union. Responses indicated that this conference serves as a nucleus for Arab solidarity and cooperation, especially given that the Arab millennial generation has a strong technological knowledge instinct, possesses the capabilities for success in software and electronics, and aspires to increase the digital economy, which in turn contributes to activating the Arab Customs Union.
His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Al-Rubaie pointed out that since the launch of the Arab Common Market in 1964, there have been ambitions for a unified economic vision among Arab countries. Although these ambitions have not yet been fully realized, hope is renewed with the real opportunity to advance the Arab world through the digital economy system.
It is noteworthy that this conference was held to announce the “Digital Economy Conference” in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for December 16-17, 2018.
