The regional workshop titled “Green Customs: The Role of Customs in Enforcing Multilateral Environmental Agreements Related to Trade and Combating Environmental Crimes” is being held today, Monday, May 12, 2025, at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo.
The event is organized by the Arab Union of Customs Clearance Professionals in cooperation with the Department of Arab Economic Integration at the League of Arab States, within the framework of the Union’s work plan and its cooperation agreement with the General Secretariat of the League.
The workshop is being led and presented by Dr. Abdelhakim Al-Alawi, a certified expert in Green Customs and a member of the Advisory Council at the General Secretariat of the Arab Union of Customs Clearance Professionals. During the interactive sessions, he highlighted the role of Arab customs authorities in implementing multilateral environmental agreements and the mechanisms for detecting and preventing the illegal trade of prohibited environmental goods.
The workshop featured rich discussions and interventions from representatives of Arab customs administrations, addressing the key practical challenges in enforcing international agreements, notably the Basel Convention on hazardous waste, the Montreal Protocol, the CITES Convention, and the Rotterdam Convention. Additionally, successful Arab case studies in this field were presented.
The program also included practical workshops and case studies aimed at enhancing participants’ skills in detecting trade-related environmental violations and strengthening their readiness to address cross-border environmental crimes.
This workshop is part of the Union’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Arab integration and joint action in addressing transboundary environmental challenges and protecting human and natural resources in the Arab region.
