On Monday, May 12, 2025, the regional workshop titled “Green Customs: The Role of Customs in Enforcing Multilateral Environmental Agreements Related to Trade and Combating Environmental Crimes” concluded its activities. The workshop was organized by the Arab Union of Customs Clearance Professionals in cooperation with the Department of Arab Economic Integration at the League of Arab States, as part of the Union’s action plan to provide technical support to Arab customs administrations and under the framework of the cooperation agreement signed with the General Secretariat of the League.
The workshop was held on the sidelines of the meeting of the Committee on Customs Procedures and Information, with active participation from representatives of customs administrations across Arab countries, in addition to experts from specialized international and regional organizations.
Held over the course of one day, the workshop featured extensive discussions and interactive sessions focused on key multilateral environmental agreements such as the Basel Convention, the Montreal Protocol, the Rotterdam Convention, and the CITES Agreement. Participants also explored international best practices in combating trade-related environmental crimes.
The program included practical case studies and training sessions aimed at enhancing the capacity of Arab customs personnel in identifying and intercepting environmentally sensitive goods, while facilitating legitimate trade in accordance with environmental obligations.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants emphasized the importance of regional coordination, information sharing, and experience exchange among customs administrations, as well as strengthening cooperation with international environmental organizations.
